Western Port Secondary College Overview:
Western Port Secondary College is a dynamic learning community located in Hastings a beautiful rural setting on the Mornington Peninsula on the metro train line running direct into Frankston and Melbourne. It is a smaller sized secondary school with approximately 580 students, set on 11 hectares with outstanding modern buildings and teaching and learning spaces.
Our school places a great emphasis on pastoral care and a very positive approach to student wellbeing. We are constantly seeking to develop each student’s personal and social skills. We believe that the best environment for students to learn is one that is safe, inclusive, respectful, caring and purposeful, and one where personalised and individual learning programs can be achieved. Being a mid-sized secondary college this is achievable for us. Each and every student is known and has a place in our school. Our core business is Teaching and Learning and Accountability. We ensure all students explicitly taught at the level they are at in order to progress along the continuum and teachers continue to work hard developing differentiated curriculum and associated assessment to accommodate this. To better facilitate our new approach to Teaching and Learning, we have a dedicated senior study centre supervised by a trained careers practitioner, Year 7 Learning Centre and recently opened a new Year 8 Learning Centre. Our Year 9 Program ‘Project 9’ continues to go from strength to strength providing a stimulating and engaging experiential learning program alongside core subjects. The school is a lead school in the Education Department endorsed STEM Catalyst program and is a partner school with the Mitchell Institute on the ‘Entrepreneurial Learning in Schools’ project. Programs ran at the senior end of the college cater to a broad range of student interests through the Victorian Curriculum of Education (VCE) and Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses.
Sporting excellence along with a strong focus on extra-curricular activities such as the Human Powered Vehicle (HPV) team is another area the college takes great pride in. The school also maintains a strong music and performing arts program and regularly host concerts and productions. The college was recently reinstated with its 5 Star Sustainability Accreditation, receiving numerous environmental awards in recent years and this supports the work of the student led Environmental Action Group. The school continues to host Malaysian and Japanese students each year and has a sister school in Malaysia which is visited by students every two years, whilst undertaking the ‘G’day USA’ tour in the alternate year.
